I believe the first production DeLorean is the VIN 500 car (currently
featured in a prominent and awesome display at the Crawford auto museum
here in Cleveland).
By generally accepted definition, a prototype is made as proof of
concept. It will often not be made by the same process as the
production units. This is the case with DeLorean prototypes.
There might be some legal status involved here, I hope someone else can
fill in the gaps. I assume that I could go to my local BMV and get
license plates for VIN 500 because its existence is recorded somewhere.
I know some cars were made on the assembly line prior to VIN 500 to help
train workers, provide crash test vehicles and quality test vehicles,
etc. Do these cars have a different sort of record? Perhaps cars made
by the production process before the official start of production are
classified as "pre-production?"
