Hi Paul,
Sounds like the 2nd gear syncro is damaged or the roll
pin the holds it is broken.
Very common problem on the Renault UN1 gearbox. The
box must be removed and them the syncro or roll pin
must be replaced.
Double check the linkages but it does sound like the
box itself
