Mike,

The shift ball should come off with a pair of channel lock pliers,
but make sure to protect the shift knob with some rubberized type
of material to keep it from getting scratched up.  Some items that
you may be able to use are a worn tennis ball or rachet ball that
has been split slightly with a razor blade, or even a piece of old
bicycle inner tube, to give some no-mare grip to the shift knob.
