Almost lost the car when an internal short set mine on fire (as in
flames from under the dash fire),

I'd recommend modifying your exterior light circuit ASAP.

BTW: My modified circuit only passes 15 milliamps through the switch,
protected by an inline 1 amp fuse nevertheless.
