The backfire thing is probably caused by an exhaust leak at or near
the manifolds or crossover pipe. Until you are able to get a good CO
reading it is hard to say about the idle. More than likely there is
a vacuum leak you haven't located yet - maybe the vacuum advance
shut off valve is still off allowing the spark to stay advanced,
maybe the manual idle screw is open, maybe the seals at the intake
tubes just after the butterflies are leaking. It sounds like you are
close but need to be very methodical and absolutely sure of each
application function and check now. You might start a checklist and
go back over everything to be sure you haven't overlooked something.
