Scott, I have repaired several RPM relay's and most of the time the relay
just comes loose from the PC board or the relay coil burns out because it's
own as long as the car is running. I have yet had to replace the 555 chip.
The other problem is the contacts burn and need cleaning and re adjusting.
Now that I have new ones in stock at a low price I haven't fixed many in the
last year.
