There never were any painted from the factory, that is true. The factory
didn't have the facilities there to do painting, for one.
However, there were some cars which were contracted out by the factory to
be painted by a contractor, as DMC was planning to sell painted cars. A
couple years ago DMC Houston found some tan interior pieces in the
warehouse marked to be used with painted cars. I don't know whether DMC
shipped body panels to be painted and then assembled them at the factory,
or whether they shipped completed cars to the contractor. I don't even
know who the contractor was.
It is possible that you got one of these factory-authorized-painted cars,
which would be an interesting collector piece. It's also possible that
the car was painted by the dealer, as you concluded; that's most likely.
Either of those could have accounted for the car being marked as red on
the original title.
