WD40 is not a lubricant.. it is a "Water Displacer" (that's where the WD comes from). I believe this stuff was designed to clean guns (and other metal) for storage.
I don't know if it will fix your particular problem, but if you want to lubricate something use a lubricant. CRC Silicone spray is what I use, it works great on the power antenna too!

After my last post I took some peoples advice and sprayed wd40 on the
linkage. It solved my problem for about 2 days, but the problem is back
again. It is very difficult to move the shift lever left to right or right
to left. Do i need to put some all purpose grease on it or what?
