Just to toss in my $0.02 into the mix (and someone feel free to jump in
and beat me if I have this wrong), but the hot start is generally
indicative of a failure of the fuel system to maintain system pressure for
*some* reason. I had a hotstart problem, and there was a rather obnoxious
fuel odor as well. Had steeled myself to replace the fuel pump, removed
the fuel pump cover and...
...fuel pump was totally submersed in fuel. Yes, those *are* electrical
connectors under that fuel, officer. Yikes.
All the fuel in the system was draining back into the fuel pump boot
(not to mention the fact that fuel was spraying everywhere while the car
was running). No pressure == no hotstart. Retorqued the dome nut and
things *seem* to be okay; juries still out, but it's definite *better* at
the very least.
Sometimes is really *is* the simple things.
