dome light/door ajar light gremlin

Ok, I know that ths topic has been done to death, but I've searched 
the archives and didn't find the answer to this question:

With the key out of the ingition, and either OR both of the dome 
lights in the "delay" position, as soon as the delay is over, why 
would the door ajar light illuminate? There is a slight current also 
feeding the light.

When BOTH of the lights are in the "off" position, the door ajar 
light goes out.

When the ignition is ON, and either of the the dome lights are in the 
delay position, the door ajar light does NOT illuminate after the 
delay shuts the lights out.

Short in the system? Electrical feedback? Bad relay? 

How do I check it?

Any other thoughts?
