You are pretty much right, except for the Corvette theory- taken from the
December 1981 issue of Car and Driver.
The Corvette itself had a horrible engine. The DeLorean was "underpowered,"
but think of it this way:
The Corvette had 190 horsepower and 280 lbs-ft of torque. In the 80's, that
was respectable for a sports car. But look at the engine size. 350 cubic
inches?!?! That means .54 horse and .8 lbs-ft per cubic inch. Not great, GM.
The DeLorean has 130 horsepower and 160 lbs-ft of torque, Car and Driver
said. With 174 cubic inches, the DeLorean has .74 horse and .91 lbs-ft per
cubic inch.
The Corvette accelerated 2.3 seconds faster, due to the extra power.
Just another way to look at it.
