Check the shock mounts, the rubber may have gone bad or just fallen 
out. The shocks themselves could also be bad. The springs tend to move 
around in the perches so a little lubricant spray sometimes helps. I 
don't think this is a steering problem as you didn't say it clunks 
when you turn. Sounds don't always come from where you think they do 
so don't limit your search to only the front left wheel. For instance 
check the trailing arm bolts just in case and maybe there is something 
loose in the trunk like the jack or who knows what in the front 
compartment!
