loose steering

I was checking out the front end and noticed that it seems that 
pushing and pulling on the sides of the tire it would move about 5 
degrees before the steering shaft would move. Looking into it further 
with the wheel off and checking the linkage of the steering rack it 
seems that the rod that goes into the gear box has slop in it before 
the steering shaft would move. Can this be fixed or do I need a new 
rack and pinion assy and i read on a previous post someone asked if 
there was a cross ref part for this pinion assy but could not find 
out if it was answered. Thanks ED HERRMANN VIN 16228
