My first thought is that if you have a working display, and you want to
play tapes, it might be wise to try to prolong it's life rather than
waiting for it to break and then working out a fix.
What seems an obvious primary solution is a thin coat of clear silicone seal,
front
and back, at the break point. That would add strength where desperately
needed and would certainly maintain or enhance flexibility. I think it
would also move that flex point slightly.

This is a tough call to make Les.
If you continue to use cassettes it's likely a matter of when and not if.
The only way to circumvent the Display problem is before it happens.
The cable bends at such an extreme angle I doubt if Silicone would have any
useful effect. The flex point will not shift. Close inspection will reveal
this.
My recommendations in order of difficulty:
1 Stop using cassettes
2 Remove the Stereo, wrap it in plastic and place another unit in the car.
3 Reroute the ribbon cable over the hinge bar ( big job )
