Transmission shift linkage

Manual transmission, shift linkage, part number 18 is listed as a
stiffener, what the heck does is stiffen? It's hanging out in empty
space on the prints. Please, in simple terms, what does it do, where
does it go, I don't seem to have that part or haven't found it yet.
(I'm having a problem in that area).
