possible overheating

My Delorean could possibly be overheating. I took it out today for a 
drive and the temperature gauge rose all the way to 260 degrees. the 
cooling fans cut on and off occanionaly. i let the car idle at 260 
degrees for about 5 minutes and nothing happened. i then tapped the 
accelator and the temperature gauge went down to 220. Does this sound 
like the gauge is wrong? Or is more serious?
