When I replaced the pick up line on my car I noticed that the fuel
pump screen (the "filter baggy") was larger then the hose. What the
manufacturer (or somebody else did) was the put glue, or some type of
resin inside the lip that connects to the hose to fill the gap to
make a snug fitting. What appears to have happened was the resin had
started to rot and chunk off. When I removed the hose from the sump,
the screen finally fell off (since replaced). What it sounds like is
some of the resin has gotten sucked up the hose and is clogging it.
The pump is probably buzzing from being starved, and this in turn is
causing the "bucking" of the car durring acceleration. Best case: the
resin is stuck in the pick up hose, and will have to be
removed/flushed out. Worse case: resin may have gone thru the hose
and ended up in the pump potenialy damaging it. In any case running
the pump w/o a screen on it can reduce the life of both the fuel pump
and the fuel filter if not cause premature failure by getting them
clogged up.
