Dave,
You are absolutely correct about mechanics throwing away the TDC pick-up
when reinstalling a transmission, unfortunately they usually throw away the
flywheel protection plate that this wire is attached to. The protection
plate is there to prevent road debris from entering the bellhousing and
causing serious damage to the flywheel and clutch components.
