My guess is a faulty mode switch or mode switch vacuum
manifold. The mode switch is the one that selects the
type of ventilation you want - defrost, heat, vent, A/C, etc.
It is a two part device - and electrical part to control the
fan, A/C clutch, etc. and a vacuum part that controls the
ventilation flaps in the plenum. The vacuum part is
shipped with a small amount of grease sealing the
vacuum control. Over time, this grease evaporates/
solidifies/whatever and no longer provides a
good seal. This leads to erratic ventilation systems.
The switch can be rebuilt at home (see 'zine #3) or
replaced with a new unit.
