Joe, you are correct about the Volvo cross reference, but K&N does not
make, never has and has no plans to, make a direct replacement air filter for
this application. This is a project I've been working on for quite a while
with K&N. I've got a friend who works in the engineering department at K&N
and I supplied him with a Delorean Air Box to play with about 2 years ago.
What we finally came up with was a "prototype" kit which he supplied to me
about a month ago to try. This "kit" uses a K&N filter which is a unit they
currently produce and some stainless steel adapter brackets to fit it to the
stock Delorean air box. It is really a very nice, simple setup and is as easy
to install as the stock filter and requires NO modifications to any Delorean
parts.
This "prototype" is the K&N filter setup we tested at the Dyno Days
testing event this past weekend in Chicago with Bob Brandy's. The testing
showed a 3 HP improvement at the rear wheels over the stock filter, with NO
other changes being made to the car. This may not seem like a big
improvement, but you have to remember we're dealing with a motor which
doesn't put out a whole lot of HP to start with. The other thing I have
noticed, and this is just from me driving the car around, is the motor seems
to "breathe" much better with the K&N. My car with the stock filter felt like
it was running out of air at about 5000 rpm and would just kind of flatten
out on the top end. With the K&N, it will now easily pull to 6000 and
beyond. The testing also confirmed this. The car was still wanting to pull
past the 5000 rpm rev limit we placed on the dyno tests.
Anyway, now that we have this information, I'm currently working with K&N
to see what we can now do to get this "prototype kit" put into production. As
soon as I receive information from K&N, I'll pass it along to the list.
