This is true! The practical side of the gullwing doors aside from creating extra entering/exiting space is for resistance in a side impact collision. Because of the high sill, and the side impact beam, the DeLorean is a much safer car, at least for its time, from a side impact standpoint. This can be seen in "Back From The Future" when John Z himself explains this reasoning.
