That's basically true. Actually modern oils and filters are so resistant
to breakdown and contamination that even manufacturers of new cars are
recommending longer change intervals.
The primary use of synthetic oil is that it is extremely resistant to very
high and low temperatures. Because of this it makes an excellent winter
oil, especially for manual transmissions. If you drive your D in the
winter (and you don't live in Texas, or Florida, or something) the use of
synthetic will save a lot of wear and tear on the mechanicals. If you
store it in the winter, you should be flushing all your fluids when you
take it out of storage anyway, so it won't matter. :}
It's also good for high-intensity driving for the same reasons, but most
D's don't get used in that way.
