The issue of the cable going slack and getting caught is important.
The way I see it done successfully on modern production cars is with
bead chain inside a stiff plastic tube. It doesn't get caught and can
absorb a lot of lost motion. Go take a walk around some junkyards and
I am sure you will find plenty of materiel to work with.
