Many antenna designs really do depend on a metallic horizontal ground
plane immediately below the antenna to perform properly. It can make a
big difference, but of course if your signal is strong enough it
doesn't matter much. One idea would be to use the magnetic mount to
center the antenna on the engine cover. That way it wouldn't be
conspicuous, and you would have sight lines through the side windows
and up through the non-metallic louvers.
Of course this would compromise the utility of this spot as a keep-warm
pizza carrier. :-)
