[DML] Hood emblem what year?

What year was the hood emblem put on the car? I have an 81 with 
grooves and a gas flap with an emblem on the hood and since I am 
going to regrain the hood I need to take it off. I was wondering if 
it was put on by the PO and if I should leave it off.
