I usually place the floor jack underneath the cross frame (the one goes under the engine).  
I find the central position and place a piece of wood between the car and the jack.  Once 
the car is high enough, I place two jack stands on the side of the cross frame.  Again, I 
have a piece of wood between the car and the jack stand to protect the frame.
