Get a real voltmeter - the one on the dash is not very accurate. This
will tell you if you really have a problem.
Check and clean all the grounds, especially the two up front hear the
radiator supports. Clean the contacts on all the fuses and relays in
the electrical compartment.
Upgrade the alternator. The Autozone/Delco 110A swap is cheap and
easy, there are other vendor-supplied upgrades if you can't figure
out the Delco thing.
When everything is cleaned up, the electrical system is fine. A lot
of what you see/hear is part of the "22-year-old-car" issue.
You're right about one thing - don't spend the money on the CD player
until the car is running right. No point in a CD player installed in
a car you can't drive. Unless you like sitting in the driveway
listening to music.
