Best course of action would be to de-grease the transmission and then
get a close look at where it's really leaking. On a manual it is very
possible to change the axle seals without taking the transmission out
of the car, for anything else it comes out.
Make sure it's really gear oil you're leaking, could also be a rear
engine main seal (but you need to pull the trans for that too).
Is this an automatic or manual? Based on the "ouline of a
transmission" comment I'm thinking an automatic with a leaky pan
gasket. About everything else leaks in one place, or runs to a low
spot and drips in one place.
