Subject: Idle Control
I took my Delorean into the shop at the beginning of the summer, to try
and
locate a oil leak i have in the engine. When i came back to talk to the
mechanic he told me that the leak was very small and that i shouldn't
worry
about it. However, he did tell me that he was a little concerned with the
way
the car was idling. He began to give me his two cents on the subject, and
told me that european car manufacturers can't seem to make a good idle
control
system. he said that they have a couple european cars in there shop every
couple of months to replace the idle control. he said that it would be
worth
my looking into, to try and get an idle control system off of a japanese
car.
he said that the japanese idle control always outlast the life of the car,
and
that i could probably find one in a junk yard.
So my question to you is, has anyone replaced the idle control with
something
like this? or is the delorean idle control pretty dependable?
Thanks
Willie Mack

Inspect the trailing arm bolts but I think the source of the noise is
one or both of the drive shafts. The drive shafts change their length
as the wheels go up and down and on turns under acceleration. They
probably just need to be disassembled, cleaned and lubricated. While
you are at it check the c/v boots and lube the c/v joints too. Since
you think the noise is from the right start with that one first but do
both as they are on the car the same amount of time. The procedure is
in the archives for the driveshafts and c/v joints.

Subject: Fuel tank baffle
I was wondering what the correct position is for the in tank
baffle, when I replaced the fuel pump and compontents the baffle
was pointing towards the left side of the car. When I see pictures
of the baffle it is pointing towards the back of the car. Which way
is the right way? Also, since I'm in there, my baffle does not have
a bottom to it, should I install one?
Thanks,

The fuel baffle should point towards the rear. It is a good idea to
install the bottom piece to the baffle as it helps keep water and
debris away from the fuel pickup line. I had the same problem on mine
where it was missing and when I serviced the fuel system, I bought
and installed one.

Subject: 3760 Miles, and still going strong.
Yesterday evening, I just returned home from my week and a half vacation
which
included the DMC Houston open house. The total drive in my DeLorean was
about
3760 miles, Minneapolis-Houston-Knoxville-Minneapolis, all within 10 days.
Grand average mileage was about 26mpg, with a couple city shots with 21,
and
a few country drives pulling 29. For anyone who may doubt the car's
ability,
I hope this proves you wrong. Not a single problem occured with the car.
A
few of you may know I developed a small short in the instrument cluster,
but
that was because I hit that bump going north from the Sofitel to fast and
too
many times. However it never effected the driveability of the car. I
would
also like to give a public thank you to Aaron Posey, Ken Koncelik, and
Dave
Swingle for allowing me to crash at thier places during my trip. Also,
Darren
Decker goes into my car's history as being the first person to drive my
DeLorean
other than me since I bought it, exactly one year ago. (Thats what you
get
when you try to drive from Houston to Knoxville in one shot starting at
3:00pm.)
Overall, I thought the open house was fun, however I'm not quite sold yet
on
the engine upgrade, I'll wait and see what stage II and III pump out. Now
my
car needs new rear tires and an oil change, so I think I'll give it a
break
for now. (8000 miles in 3 months is a little exessive).

Consider yourself LUCKY that he didn't try to fix your idle! It sounds
like he is not familiar with the idle system on the Delorean and would
only screw it up! Once working properly the idle system is very
reliable but for a mechanic who doesn't know how to fix it when it
breaks he can cause more problems. The idle system more often than not
isn't even broken, just not set up properly! I recommend that you find
someone familiar with the Bosch fuel system or if you have one nearby
a Volvo dealer. Of course you can use the DML or any of the venders
would talk your mechanic through the procedures on setting up the idle
correctly. As far as the leak it is usually something simple like the
sending unit on the rear left side of the engine.

I am curious about owner's groups... has anyone joined the Delorean Owners
Association? I was thinking about it.

Subject: New to DMC news list
I have been on the list for a week or so and have been looking at getting
a
DeLorean off and on for the past 15 years. I like all the advice the
owners
give each other and I was hoping for some advice for new buyers. I have
been
looking through all the sale ads on the internet and there seems to be no
shortage of D's in all price ranges. Just curious why people sell...Lose
interest? cost? practicallity? There is an old addage in boating that the
2
happiest days of a boat owners life are the day he buys his boat and then
the day he sells it. I am hoping this is not the case here. I also
noticed
alot have gone up for a sale in the past week...Is there a better time of
year to buy? I would also like to buy from someone who is known to the
List
instead of a stranger...Thanks in advance for any help

Subject: Re: Fuel tank baffle
I just replaced my baffle. I ordered a new one from DMC Houston,
expecting there to be a bottom plate, but came with just the main
baffle piece. I called DMC and asked about the bottom. I was told that
it is no longer available, but that it is not needed. When the baffle
is attached securely to the bottom of the tank, the tank itself seals
the bottom edge of the baffle. Also, I tried the position of the
baffle both ways, left side, and back and it makes no difference. I
ended up pointing it rearward.
On a related note, my original problem was that the car would surge
and stall on turns with a low tank. The problem was NOT the baffle,
which was installed properly, but the hose connecting the pump to the
filter inside the baffle was cracked at the pump connection. When the
tank got low, below the level of the crack, the pump was sucking air
through the crack. I trimmed the hose down below the crack and
reattached it to the pump.

George, The round part baffel installs towards the back of the tank, so
when
you install the pick up hose there isn't a crimp in the line.

Subject: Re: 1/18 scale D question
I am under the impression that the initial run of models will be about
50,000 units. In addition to being sold by DeLorean Motor Company and
regular "model" places, they expect these to sold in retail stores as
well,
though the timeframe for that is not known to me. I wouldn't expect to see
a
production run for some time after the initial 50K, however.
As a sidenote, thanks to everyone who has ordered one of the models from
our
online store. As of this morning, we have over 100 orders!
