Subject: DeLorean leather seat covers - update
We just approved the samples of the newly made vinyl for the seat covers being made for us. The original grain vinyl has been unavailable for some time, and we had to have a new die made to emboss the correct grain in the vinyl for the seats (and possibly in the future, other vinyl interior parts).
With this done, I expect we will have NEW, FOUR-PIECE leather and vinyl seat cover sets in black and grey sometime in February. The cost will be $599 per SET. A set is four pieces to do both seats but does NOT include the back screw-on panel, as most peoples are in good condition. They will also be available at additional cost if needed.
I expect Warren will start taking pre-orders for these within the next day or two. Start thinking about the summer shows (Pigeon Forge, anyone?) and get those seats looking sharp!

Harold,
you are right on about everything that has to do with oil and reading the
weight lingo and such, but i think most owners are convinced that the purflux
filter is a better match to the engine than either Hastings or NAPA Gold. Do the
ones you use have an anti-drain back valve? if not, you could be wearing your
engine down every time you start it for just a few cents savings!! i have
never tried either of those two.

Any DeLorean owners on the list near Bradenton/Sarasota Florida area? I
may have a proposition for you.
I am getting married on April 4th at the SandBar on Anna Maria Island

Florida owners,
Since there is such a high concentration of DeLoreans in Florida, we
should have a tech meeting for all Florida owners to prepare their
cars for the DeLorean Car Show 2004 at Pigeon Forge, TN in June.
Rob Grady will be in Florida in April and has generously offered to
provide his services on Sunday, April 11th for such an event. We
would need a centralized location with plenty of space to meet, go
over cars and answer any questions. If anyone has any suggestions,
please let me know so Rob can book us into his schedule.
Even if you are unable to attend the Pigeon Forge show, it would be
a good opportunity for DeLorean owners and enthusiasts to meet a
leading vendor and expert on such a exclusive car.
You may contact me at ken@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Well after a year of trying and 6 different applications we now accept visa
in addition to Paypal and of course good checks.
It is up and runing on the DeLorean Car Show Store where you can register.
www.deloreancarshow.com
The DeLorean Car Show Pigeon Forge is off to a fast start and we are looking
forward to a great show.
The Raffle Car is in the process of being refurbished and it has cleaned up
far better than I ever thought. The trunk is as clean as the car I had shown
in Houston in the concours. The undercarriage is clean and it has been cleaned
and repainted to prevent future rust.
In the next issue of Gullwing and DeLorean Car Show magazine there will be
pictures of the car. If all goes well and the weather holds up we may have the
car out and driving by mid March.
One highlight is the engine is being detailed and the valve covers
powdercoated to match the wheels.
The interior carpet has been replaced with NEW carpet and the dash, glove box
and glove box knee pad redone.
The car is being detailed and is looking good.
For more Details you will have to read about it on the web page, or one of
the magazines.
So get your tickes and good luck.
Also for the first time in years I called John DeLorean for his birthday and
all I got was a busy signal.

Subject: Transaxle question
Hello List - Happy New Year. I received an unusual question in my
email, and I thought that I would toss it out to the experts, and
see what answers float to the surface. The following is a "cut and
paste" from the message:
"I'm building a GT40 replica which is configured for a Renault
transaxle. I have a 369.05 (from a Renault 20, I believe), which
has a final drive of 4.11:1, which is unacceptably high.
My questions are: what exact model of transaxle is in the Delorean
(UN1? Which dash number or Renault model?), and will the final
drive from the Delorean transaxle swap into my 369?
Thanks for whatever info you can provide."
I know that the various transaxles were discussed some time ago, but
I'm having trouble deciphering what the final answers were. Does
anybody have any information that I can share with thsi gentleman?
I know that it's a little off topic (but only a little - He did ask
about the DeLorean configuration!) Thank you so much!

Subject: Free Advice--It isn't Free to Anybody!
There were a lot of posts about Rob Grady. About how long it takes to
get major work done by him and his enormous backlog. I was thinking
about it and I might have an answer. When you call his "free" tollfree
number (the one where HE pays for the call!) you get his FREE (to you)
advice and years of technical experience. He doesn't try to end the
call early and is ALWAYS available to ANYONE whether you own a
Delorean or not. He will spend an hour with you. His shop is a small
operation and he is a hands-on guy doing much of the actual work on
the cars himself (WHEN HE IS NOT ON THE PHONE GIVING AWAY FREE
INFORMATION!) The time on the phone is time taken away from the work
he does on the cars maybe even your car if it is in the shop! I am
sure he does not realize the enormous amout of time he spends on the
phone. When I am in his shop he is regularly interupted by the many
calls a day he gets. I am also guessing but this is his idea of
customer service unfortunatly he is usually the only person capable of
doing this in addition to all the other things a business owner must
handle (like ordering parts from venders, developing new parts like
the Zillas, keeping a huge inventory from running out of stock, etc.)
If he hired a person that was actually able to do the techincal stuff
on the phone then he would really see the cost of this (free) service!
Keep this in mind the next time you use that FREE # and take up his
valuable time. Now I am not saying not to call him but have some
consideration for this (free) service.
Just my 2 cents
BTW this advice goes for ALL the Delorean venders who are glad to help
us keep our cars going. If we abuse this service then you might see
them try to charge for it (like software companies) or they may
restrict it or even stop.

Hello all,
After a flubbed attempt to paint fascias outside in Ohio's lovely
sub-arctic weather, I finally found an inside paint booth big enough to
do a fascia, and I've now got 3 rears and 2 fronts done correctly, and
ready to go!
Again...asking $300 per fascia, and if your old one's are in fairly good
shape, and you send them to me, I will refund a maximum of $100.
Shipping is $50.00, and I can send pictures to anyone who is
interested. E-mail me privately if you wish to learn more.

I received an email from someone who apparently was confused about
the seat cover sets we are offering. To clarify...these sets are made
as the originals, with the same stitching and with LEATHER seating
surfaces and VINYL sides. The grain of the vinyl is what we had to
have made.
So now, for less than what it would cost to have a set of seat covers
made by your local upholstery shop, you can have a set of exact
replacement in the correct materials made for you.

Are you doing the fascias in matte or gloss finishes?
How do you ship them? I understand that the rears will

kind of warranty do you offer? Many of the repainted
fascias I have seen (on cars for sale) have already
started to peel at the edges where the paint meets the
black areas. Are you stripping the old paint or how
are you preparing them? What about the warping in the
fronts, are you putting in any reinforcement as part
of your refurbishment? This is something that I wanted
for my car, but I'd like to get something that will
last, preferably at least HALF as long as my originals
did...

James,
This is great news. The Delorean is getting close to other collector
cars like the old mustangs and camaros, GTO, etc. where virtually
every part is available. This means the cars can last forever. (I
certainly intend on giving mine to my son.) Deloreans will take there
place in history along with other historic muscle cars, because they can
be fully restored.

Subject: Re: Re: Refurbished Fascias
Hi Sonny,
- I did these fascias with a base coat/clear coat process, so the finish
is glossy. I used the paint specs that Ken Koncelik posted to the list
a few months back...so the color is a spot on match for the
original...it just has a glossy finish to it.
- The rears will go via UPS...I had some custom boxes made that are big
enough to safely ship the rears, but just small enough to fit inside
UPS's maximum non-freight dimensions
- Shipping is a flat $50...UPS wants roughly $35 to ship them in the
continental US, and the other $15 is for the cost of the boxes.
- For $300 there is no warranty...these are used, refurbished fascias.
They are not new ones, and in some cases this is more obvious than in
others. I've made every attempt to make these appear as good as they
ever will, but they do have flaws in them. Nothing that's visible from
3+ feet away.
- I took extra care to prevent these fascias from peeling. I've had
mine on my car for over a year, and they still look as good as the day
Ken and I redid them. (pics from that day are posted in the DML photo
gallery page) The peeling you've seen on cars for sale, was most likely
due to the factory paint process which involved many, (20+ sometimes!)
layers. The layers were often not applied before the previous ones were
dry, so they tend to stick to themselves more than to the surface of the
fascia. This causes bubbling, and eventually, the old paint cracks and
peels. Painting over the top of this is not a very good idea, so the
fascias I have were carefully stripped of any bubbling/cracked/peeling
sections, then sanded with 80 grit, 220 grit, then wet sanded with 600
grit and finally 1500 grit paper, and primed so as to prevent this from
ever reoccurring.
- The eyebrow effect on the front of a lot of these old fascias has been
corrected by installing a 3/8" aluminium alloy bar under the top
portion. We installed these on all the fascias...not just the ones that
needed it, so you can be assured that these will never warp again there.
I have every hope that these fascias will last a good long time. I'm
conservatively estimating that you should be able to get a good 10-15
maybe even 20 years out of these. More if your car is stored properly
and driven sensibly.
I'm sure Ken can attest to the durability and quality of this paint, as
he has been to my house and seen my work.
Let me know if you have any other concerns before you make a decision,
and I will be happy to address them.
Thanks,
Josh

I agree. It seems that this is a great point in time to own a
Delorean. Between the growth of vendors, reproduction of parts, the
internet providing a point of information exchange, it's affordable
and feasible to own, maintain and restore DeLoreans. It also shows
how loyal the owners are and how interest has grown in the cars.
I'm not giving mine to my kids though. I'm going to be buried in mine.

I'm happy to hear the new seat covers will be soon be available, (even though
I don't need them.) A few weeks ago, someone on the DML with a set of NOS
covers asked for installation directions. Having done the job myself last week,
I'm in the process of putting it on paper. The new seats look, feel and smell
great. Wow! Just be aware: you need the patience of Job, and the arms of a
bricklayer to do the job. Plus a fairly brawny assistant. I worked on them over
the course of 4 days. After day one, my only advice would have been, "Do not
attempt this at home!" So far, writing about it is taking as long as doing

Toby,
The Renault tranny in the DeLorean is a R30 type 4141-80. The final drive
ratio is 3:44:1. However, you may want to persuade him to look at the
Renault 21 Turbo 5-speed box built into a Renault 30 casing with the Renault
30 5th gear for that swap due to the weak input shaft of the DeLorean tranny
and that its only good up to 250 hp. Most of the GT40 replicas have Ford 351
motors (if he's going that route)
Hope this helps,

Not to badger you to death with questions James, but I'm assuming these repros will have the proper rippled look to them? I've seen some of the replacement seatcovers some people put in their cars, and they lack this detail. I'm interested in buying new seatcovers just so I can get this look back into my car. As everyone knows our seats shrink and dry out with age, and lose their original ripple effect.

I have an original set of grey seat covers, not reproductions that I
will sell for the price of repro's ($599.) They are new, never
installed. email me off line if you are interested.

Subject: [DML] DeLorean leather seat covers - update
We just approved the samples of the newly made vinyl for the seat covers
being made for us. The original grain vinyl has been unavailable for
some time, and we had to have a new die made to emboss the correct grain
in the vinyl for the seats (and possibly in the future, other vinyl
interior parts).
With this done, I expect we will have NEW, FOUR-PIECE leather and vinyl
seat cover sets in black and grey sometime in February. The cost will be
$599 per SET. A set is four pieces to do both seats but does NOT include
the back screw-on panel, as most peoples are in good condition. They
will also be available at additional cost if needed.
I expect Warren will start taking pre-orders for these within the next
day or two. Start thinking about the summer shows (Pigeon Forge,
anyone?) and get those seats looking sharp!
