RE: [DMCForum] Hmm....

Well.... Yes, it is a Volvo, but it is nothing like the Volvo four
cylinder motor most of those tuners speak of.

Put 15 pounds of boost into a PRV and you will end up with with a big
box of Volvobits cereal that stays very, very crunchy in milk.

The pistons & rings are not strong enough to handle the increased forces
and will shatter.

Martin will be able to give you the full story though.

Subject: [DMCForum] Hmm....

Well, I'm checking in after a long absence.

I'm mostly going to ignore the recent events involving childish
behavior by multiple parties in which both sides were partly wrong and
much ado was raised about little or nothing, although I find certain
DMCForum front page text rather amusing in light of recent dramatics.

However, this is not my point in posting.

I have my first car - a Volvo 740 GL, non-turbo. While being pressured
by the local crazy-people-Volvo-tuning group to either install a turbo
on my stock engine (hmmm... how about no?) or do an engine swap
(because we all know that a teenager with a part-time job can afford
to spend a few grand on parts, as well as not having a car for several
days..), I learned some interesting information. Apparently these
Volvo tuners (not ricers, thankfully) regularly run 15, 16, up to 20
psi in their engines with no ill effects. This got my interest piqued.

The DMC-12 has a specific engine block that is, for all intents and
purposes, a Volvo block, yes?

Are there any other Volvo V6 blocks that are readily available and
would fit in the engine bay? I know engine swapping has been discussed
endlessly and all practical alternatives have been explored, but I
don't remember ever reading about this possibility. Since the
internals on the PRV V6 are cast instead of forged, and there aren't
readily available forged internals for this block, why not a more
'normal' block?

I just think another Volvo block might mate up to the transmission
with a minimum of effort and work..... or at least less than other
options. If that's true, having an engine that will handle that much
boost would probably be very nice.....

Or I'm just spouting nonsense and you guys can ignore this since it's
probably been beaten to death already.
