no argument there. Its important to note, they pretty much just stick
7segment VFD's into instrument clusters, not all that interesting really.

Not quite true.. it isn't easy at all.  Anyone who works on automotive
network protocols can assure you that (both from a electrical and a
software perspective).  Its not impossible, just difficult, its very
similar to MP3 decoders.  If I wanted to make my own MP3 player from
scratch (without a 32bit pc), I'd be in trouble, so would almost every
major 'maker' of portable mp3 players.  They all use one of two
commercially available (and individually available) decoder ASICS.
Similarly most all OBDII readers license the technology (circuitry and
software) to connect to OBDII networks from the small amount of companies
that actually have in-house solutions to conversing with all four (and
more) OBDII interfaces.  Its important to note that the OBDII
specification only calls for what data to record, how to store it
(format), command/resp. format, and what commands should return what data,
they do NOT say how a car company should build the interface to the
network. This is why there are so many variations-of-theme here, and why
not two car lines seem to have the same electrical/software
characteristics in the OBDII interface.
