It's because of the open platform in the back. New buses have folding
doors -- aren't practical in Central London (no place to pull over to
load & unload). You need that open platform so people can climb on &
off quickly, often while the bus is still moving. Imagine how much
worse congestion would be if buses had to stop in the middle of the
street, totally blocking traffic, and wait while people boarded and
paid the driver as they do in Manchester or Glasgow.

Central London is the only place you'll find those old double deck
buses. That's why they're called "London Buses".
