As far as I can tell, it's for real. Even on the BTTF DVD, I believe 
it was Bob Gale that said Crispin was always wanting to deviate from 
the script, and have his character of George McFly do goofy shit that 
made no sense.

Great actor IMO. He literally acts out the thoughts in his own head, 
in order to show you what's going on in his mind at the time.

Probably a quiet guy in his personal life. Most likely refined, and 
very restrained. A polar opposite of his acting carrer.
