Maybe I'm missing something or doing something that I am not supposed to, 
but I lock
my doors while the door is open and in the air all the time.
I just reach in and press the lock down, then close the door.
Sometimes I use the key, but not always.

Also, this person might be having a locked up solinoid or jammed mech.
