I have heard of it before. I was going to do it but there is really no 
safe way to attach the seat in the rear shelve area plus it would be a 
pain just to get the kid in and out. I imagine back in the 80's the 
seat laws were less strict and you could easily get by with out a seat 
belt but now that seat must be secured with a seat belt and there isn't 
one on the rear shelve.

I put my Daughter in the passenger seat before in a baby car seat.
