For a few years I worked at a high-end audio shop. 
They were hooked up correctly.   But an A/B comparison
with a high quality box speaker (IMHO) resulted in
better sound quality and comparable (if not better)
imaging.

Mirage had a line of nice speakers (This is in the
late 80's).  The M1 was a little expensive for my
wallet, but the $1000-$2000 price range speakers were
better then the maggies.  Kef, and Mission also had
some nice stuff too...  Less money than the maggies,
and sounded better with no need for a subwoofer. 
(This was before all the new surround sound and DSP
stuff... now a SubWoofer is required no matter what).
