Oh one last thing... if you don't know how old the fuel
filter is, it is best to replace it.  One of the Bosch books
I have says to replace the filter every year or 10K miles.
This sounds very often to me, so I would tend to be slack
with that interval.  If you don't know the history of your
filter, it could be stopped up.  Who was it who recently
said that they found mud in their filter?  But your symptoms
sound more like a hole in the fuel suction line.  If your
accumulator is original, it is most likely going bad or is
bad by now.
