You are right, Farrar. "Original miles" should also mean the original,
numbers-matching drive train is in the vehicle, and the odometer has never
been tampered with, failed or replaced. Sometimes this can be very hard to
prove or disprove though, since some collectible cars value will increase
substantially based on this. The Superbird and Chevelle LS6 come to mind.

OK, thanks. That's what I figured -- people are forever polishing terds.
The only situation I could think of in which using the phrase "original
miles" would be appropriate would be in the case where something
substantial, such as the engine or transmission, had been replaced. In
that case, you could have, for example, "original miles" (presumably
shown on the odometer) versus miles on the new engine. But in the case
of the DeLorean, most people have the original engine still in the car
whether they like it or not...
Hey, maybe I could start selling "custom aftermarket mileage". :)
