Well, yes, you used to be able to do this, but it doesn't work that way with
OBD-II.

There are several software packages and cable sets that you can use with a
laptop or Palm though.  My old Nextel I-95 phone actually had a OBD2
software package on it.  THAT was cool.

I would suggest you doing a lot of research before trying this, but on an
older car I had you could short two pins in the diagnostic connector and the
engine light would blink in a series which you would look up to see what the
code was.  I bet Dave would know more about this.

PepBoys had one on sale for like $130 last week..
They also had one for $300 that did cars older than
96, when each car had their own special way of doing
it.

All of the 96+ cars are supposed to be "standard".
