Re: [DMCForum] Re: Handling

Tires, tires, tires!!!

Tires make a bigger difference in snow and ice driving than almost any
other factor. I have the Yokohama AVS-I's on mine. Those are 3 season
performance tires and even when the tires were new I wouldn't have taken
it
out in the snow. With a decent set of All Season or Performance All Season

tires on it the car will behave much nicer.

An example: I have a 99 Miata which is RWD with a LSD. The factory tires
were Michelin Pilot SX-GT's, one of the high performance 3-season Pilots
(Pilots come in all flavors). It snowed the day after I picked the car up
from the dealer. I was going down the street 3 blocks from my house and
when I shifted from 2nd to 3rd I was suddenly facing the opposite
direction. I'm experienced at driving in the snow, and I had been driving
very gently since it was a new car so this scared the crap out of me. I
bought a set of Michelin Artic-Alpin winter tires on a spare set of steel
wheels and now the car is like a little blue snowmobile. I regularly pass
up SUVs now in snow and ice.
