I can't speak for the DMC, where I've never really heard my fuel pump (but

nor have I run the car till it's almost empty), but I regularly swap gas 
on my other car (gotta run 104 octane and crank up the boost on weekends) 
and when I use the fuel pump to pump itself dry, it screams when it's near

empty.
