Soot is a sign of incomplete combustion.

Is your distributor cap on straight? 2 and 5 are on the same side
of the cap, so if it's on crooked, there's a possibility the rotor
isn't making contact with the contacts to the plugs.

When I replaces my ignition-electrics I found the cap had been on crooked
at
one stage and the rotor had worn a slit into the cap ABOVE the contacts...
