RE: [DMCForum] sand blasting vs bead blasting

I can confirm this. Sand blasting will leave contaminants and is very
invasive to the surface and if you aren't careful you could blow a hole
right through the metal. Other types of media blasting are much easier on
the surface and I think one that is used commonly is actually baking soda.
These are also easier on the environment and you really need to wear a
quality respirator as opposed to the little doctor-type masks.

You may also need a metal-prep cleaner before spraying on any paint or a
metal-etching primer depending on how detailed you want to get. Consider
what type of paint to use as some will become sticky in the heat and could
cause the flapper door to stick. Depending on what type of metal the
flapper door is made of you could be really anal and consider powder
coating.

Subject: [DMCForum] sand blasting vs bead blasting

I want to clean the rust off of the flapper door in my a/c housing and
paint
them. I understand that there are some disadvantages to sand blasting
such
as that it will impregnate the surface with some contaminate that may
promote rust. So for this reason bead blasting is preferred. Can anyone
confirm or deny this urban legend?
