Hey John,
I think I have a creative idea:
Why not take a sheet of Glass (or Plexiglass) and mask off 
a "negative" of what you want to see. That is to say, mask off 
everything but the lettering and design you want to have.

Then bead blast or sand blast (lightly) the surface. When you remove 
the masking only what was not masked will be "etched".  If you do 
this on glass, you can then edge-light the glass...I guarantee it 
would look awesome!

Just an idea - no doubt it would be unique. I get into creative 
stuff like that.
