What got me was "did not turn off the ignition for fear of disabling the 
power steering." - as they pointed out on the radio, all he needed to do 
was pull into the hard sholder, keep it strait and switch off the ignition

Sometimes a little bit of car knowledge goes a long way :-) And another 
reason not to own an automatic!
