Part Cross References

As a matter of interest:

I've seen a lot of postings asking for cross reference part numbers. Is 
there a big database anywhere with all the parts or is it just whomever got 
part x from y car generally remembers and helps the others out?

Just curious, I know that parts aren't too hard to come by but if I'm going 
to invest I'd like to get it straight.
