[DML] In a bind with tires

Everyone knows the factory sizes for the rear, 235/60/15. When I received my car in the Summer of '05, she had factory sized fwds, but 255/60/15s on rear. That tells me that any size in between should fit, no? I'm in a financial bind at the moment, but the car desperately needs new tires for safety. The factory size are becoming more expensive as time goes on (though I did find a fly by midnight brand, I believe it was Eldorado Tire who had them for $95 a pop.)

Can I go slightly smaller than factory? Would this improve MPG or compromise safety?

Any deals out there that other owners have run into?
