[DML] Re: One Man Shows

One Man Shows are the nature of our hobby. There just aren't enough DeLoreans in the world to support more than one organization the size of DMCH, which must be admitted does not supply everything our cars want or need.

Replacement lower control arms are a perfect example. DMCH has not had any leftover factory stock for years. Three One Man Shows stepped in to fill the void: Byrne Heninger, John Hervey, and Bryan Pearce (while they were available DMCH sold Bryan's arms). John only made one limited run of aluminum arms which sold out long before he removed them from his website. Bryan is no longer making LCA's either. Today, replacement lower control arms are truly only one man's option: Byrne. Josh Bengston is supposed to be working on LCA's, but they are not yet available, and if/when they are Josh will be yet another One Man Show in the lower control arm market.

The same can be said for replacement driver side torsion bars. Dave McKeen is the Bob Zilla of today (one man show for electronic components). Josh Bengston is pretty much the sole supplier for stainless brackets. Etc.

In Message #86028 you asked: "What are owners who converted to
carburetors to do if you are no longer are around to help them?" The reason I use an extremely common Ford carburetor is exactly so that owners will not be dependent upon me as a One Man Show myself -- they can seek assistance from anyone else who uses the same carb (your friend 20 miles away is a perfect example: when he was experimenting with his carburetor and got it all out of adjustment he sought assistance from a Mustang owner to put the adjustments back).

One Man Shows are the nature of our hobby, which does bring up another point: if only one supplier is making a product that you may want someday, it may be in your best interest to buy it now even if you won't need it until later. How many owners are lamenting not buying a set of Toby Peterson's trailing arm bolts while they were still available?
