Just spoke to Julee at Midwest. While Houston has indeed changed stock status of the stand alone sending units they used to sell, those units are not in fact available yet. Houston exhausted its previous stocks, and is still sourcing a supplier for the next production run. Julee (and Dave in the background) do not have any projected dates of availability. At least Houston has rekindled interest in the part.

As far as all the bitching and complaining about baffling is concerned: anything that fits through the tank opening can be used as a baffle. If you want taller sides, just stick something in there that has taller sides. I only started using tuna fish cans because they are basically the same size as John's baffle:

For a solid bottom baffle, rate at which fuel drains out is determined by size and quantity of the holes at the bottom. If you want your baffle to retain fuel longer, simply drill fewer smaller holes.
